USS Pintado (Lt.Cdr. B.A. Clarey) tries to torpedo and sink the Japanese aircraft carrier Junyo (offsite link), but her torpedoes hit the Japanese destroyer Akikaze (1345 tons, offsite link) instead. The Akikaze blows up and sank in the South China Sea some 160 miles west of Cape Bolinao, Luzon, Philippines in position 16°48'N, 117°17'E.
