Observed two hits forward of his foremast when the range was outside of 9000 yards. Both caused a short fire to break out as evidenced by a burst of flame and a large streamer of white smoke blowing to leeward. Believe one of these hits set off a ready ammunition box because of intensity suddeness, and briefness of smoke. Volume of target's fire was considerably reduced by these hits and from then on his movements became wild and erratic. Blenny stayed outside of the escorts range.
0748 hours - Ceased firing, out of 35 rounds only 2 hits had been obtained.
