28 Mar 1945
USS Crevalle (Cdr. E.H. Steinmetz, USN) departed from Guam for her patrol area. She was escorted out by USS Raby (Lt.Cdr. J.L. Slade, USNR).
9 Apr 1945 (position 32.33, 128.25)
USS Crevalle (Cdr. E.H. Steinmetz, USN) damaged a Japanese auxiliary submarine chaser and a trawler with gunfire east of Kyushu, Japan in position 32°33'N, 128°25'E. The action had to be broken off due to return fire from the enemy. Crevalle dived and was then hunted and depth charged but escaped without damage.
(All times are zone I, -8) 0744 hours - Sighted two ships in position 32°33'N, 128°25'E. Manned battle stations.
0810 hours - Identified the targets as a auxiliary submarine chaser and a trawler. Range was now 6200 yards. Considered the targets too small for torpedo fire. Decided to battle surface and attack the auxiliary submarine chaser first.
0905 hours - Surfaced at a range of 10000 yards.
0917 hours - Range now 5500 yards. Opened fire on the auxiliary submarine chaser. The trawler turned and gave us a 40 degree port angle on the bow. Maneuvered to keep him there. 5" now concentrated on the trawler and 40mm on the auxiliary submarine chaser. The range closed to 2500 yards and the enemy was trying to box us in. The auxiliary submarine chaser was firing 40mm while the trawer was firing 3" and possibly also 40mm. Several hits and close missed were obtained on the trawler with the 5" gun. Our forward 40mm meanwhile had jammed after firing only 8 rounds. The after 40mm was still banging away at the auxiliary submarine chaser and obtained serveral hits. At one stage the auxiliary submarine chaser turned away.
0930 hours - After 104 rounds the after 40mm also jammed. Decided to break off the action. Secured all guns.
0936 hours - Dived and rigged for silent running and depth chaging. Range to the enemy was now 4000 yards.
0942 hours - Went to 350 feet. Two depth charges were dropped, not close.
0945 hours - Two more depth charges.
0952 hours - Two more depth charges.
0958 hours - One depth carge to port and above.
1007 hours - One depth charge astern to starboard and below.
1010 hours - One more depth charge to starboard and above.
1054 hours - Two more depth charges quite some way off.
1103 hours - At periscope depth. All clear. One more depth charge was now dropped quite some way off again.
1111 hours - No contacts with ST radar.
1128 hours - Heard one explosion.
1130 hours - Secured from battle stations. During the action a total of 43 rounds of 5" and 112 rounds of 40mm had been fired.
10 Apr 1945 (position 33.37, 129.12)
USS Crevalle (Cdr. E.H. Steinmetz, USN) torpedoed and damaged the Japanese frigate Ikuna (940 tons, offsite link) south-west of Iki Island in position 33°37'N, 129°12'E. Ikuna was on A/S patrol together with frigate Kaibokan 72.
(All times are zone I, -9) 2119 hours - In position 33°40'N, 129°18'E obtained SJ radar contact bearing 005°(T), range 15000 yards.
2122 hours - Stationed radar tracking party.
2126 hours - SJ radar now reported two contacts.
2144 hours - Battle stations. The targets could not be seen from the bridge.
2154 hours - Headed in for attack. Spotted our target at a range of 4300 yards, an A/S vessel. Did not spot the other target. Course of the target was 200°(T), speed 7 knots.
2225 hours - In position 33°37'N, 129°12'E fired torpedoes from 1800 yards. Two hits were obtained.
2232 hours - The target opened up on us with gunfire. Range at this time was 3500 yards. Went ahead flank to open the range.
2251 hours - Lost contact with the target at a range of 10000 yards. Still had contact on the other target at a range of 14000 yards. Considered the target to have sunk.
2255 hours - Secured from battle stations.
11 Apr 1945 (position 33.50, 127.41)
USS Crevalle (Cdr. E.H. Steinmetz, USN) attacked a Japanese patrol vessel with three torpedoes south of Korea in position 33°50'N, 127°41'E. No hits were obtained.
(All times are zone I, -9) 2001 hours - In position 33°51'N, 127°07'E obtained SJ radar contact at a range of 8600 yards and 12700 yards bearing 348°(T). Commenced tracking.
2109 hours - Manned battle stations. Enemy course was 090°(T), speed 9 knots.
2125 hours - Headed in for attack.
2143 hours - Identified the target as a patrol boat of about 300 tons.
2145 hours - In position 33°50'N, 127°41'E fired three torpedoes from 1900 yards. All missed. No counter attack followed.
3 May 1945
USS Crevalle (Cdr. E.H. Steinmetz, USN) ended her 6th war patrol at Guam. She was escorted in by USS SC-1069 (Lt.(jg). C.M. Janicki, USNR). At Guam she was refitted by USS Proteus.

USS Crevalle (Cdr. E.H. Steinmetz, USN) torpedoed and sank the Japanese merchant cargo ship Hokuto Maru (2211 GRT, built 1944) in the western approaches to Tsugaru Strait in position 40°54'N, 139°48'E.
(All times are zone I, -9) 2112 hours - In position 40°50'N, 139°45'E obtained SJ radar contact bearing 035°(T), range 13200 yards. Commenced tracking.
2121 hours - Manned battle stations. Emeny course 170°(T), speed 8 knots. These was no escort.
2139 hours - Started attack.
2151 hours - Fired two stern torpedoes from 2250 yards. Both hit.
2205 hours - A loud explosion coming from the direction of the target. Radar could not pick him up anymore. Considered the target must have sunk.
10 Jun 1945 (position 40.44, 139.48)
USS Crevalle (Cdr. E.H. Steinmetz, USN) torpedoed and sank the Japanese army cargo ship Daiki Maru (2217 GRT, built 1944) in the western approaches to Tsugaru Strait in position 40°44'N, 139°48'E.
Earlier that day Crevalle had attacked a tug with one torpedo that broached resulting in the tug avoiding it by just a few feet.
(All times are zone I, -9) 0730 hours - Sighted smoke and a mast bearing 021°(T) in position 40°44'N, 139°52'E.
0848 hours - Battle stations. The contact developed into a tug towing some sort of raft. Enemy course was 190°(T), speed 3.5 knots. Decided to fire a torpedo at the tug.
0955 hours - Fired a bow torpedo from 800 yards. The torpedo broached and the tug managed to evade it by only a few feet.

1212 hours - In position 40°44'N, 139°48'E sighted a ship hull down bearing 342°(T).
1215 hours - Manned battle stations. No escort was seen. Enemy course 175°(T), speed 7 knots.
1247 hours - In position 40°44'N, 139°48'E fired three torpedoes from 750 yards. Two hits were obtained.
1250 hours - The target was seen to have overturned and was sinking with only her bow now above the water.
11 Jun 1945 (position 40.43, 139.51)
USS Crevalle (Cdr. E.H. Steinmetz, USN) torpedoed and sank the Japanese army cargo ship Hakuzan Maru No.5 (2211 GRT, built 1944) off Henashi Zaki, Honshu, Japan in position 40°43'N, 139°51'E.
(All times are zone I, -9) 0242 hours - In position 40°32'N, 139°47'E obtained SJ radar contact bearing 155°(T), range 18000 yards. Commenced tracking.
0252 hours - Manned battle stations.
0313 hours - Fired two bow torpedoes from 2300 yards.
0314 hours - The target appeared to have spotted the torpedoes as he blows his whistle and appeared to back down full. Smoke was pouring from his stack. Both torpedoes missed.
0328 hours - Submerged for another approach on the target.
0339 hours - Fired two bow torpedoes from 1400 yards. Both hit. The target turned over to port in two minutes. He sank in six minutes.
13 Jun 1945 (position 42.36, 139.46)
USS Crevalle (Cdr. E.H. Steinmetz, USN) destroyed two sailing vessels with gunfire off the west coast of Hokkaido, Japan.
(All times are zone I, -9) 0327 hours - In position 42°36'N, 139°46'E obtained radar contact on two small sailing vessels.
0347 hours - Battle stations, gun crews were standing by below.
0355 hours - Surfaced and manned the guns.
0405 hours - In position 42°36'N, 139°46'E opened fire on a small lugger from a range of 700 yards. Both 40mm guns and the 5" hit repeatedly.
0414 hours - The target was awash, down by the stern and listing to port. Ceased fire and headed for the second contact, a slightly larger sampan.
0419 hours - Opened fire from 4000 yards. The enemy was heading for the beach.
0423 hours - The enemy was hit several times and was thorn apart.
0426 hours - Ceased firing. During the action 23 rounds of 5" and 240 rounds of 40mm had been used.
14 Jun 1945 (position 43.23, 139.47)
USS Crevalle (Cdr. E.H. Steinmetz, USN) attacked a Japanese convoy with three torpedoes in the Sea of Japan, north of the Tsugaru Strait. No hits were obtained.
(All times are zone I, -9) 1440 hours - In position 41°45'N, 139°59'E sighted masts bearing 220°(T). Sound reported pinging coming from the same direction.
1445 hours - Sighted a merchant ship bearing 042°(T).
1452 hours - Manned battle stations. Three small transports and two escorts were seen to make up this convoy.
1522 hours - One of the escorts was close. Decided to fire a down the throat shot at her.
1525 hours - Fired three torpedoes from 1200 yards. No hits were obtained.
1537 hours - Four depth charges, not close.
1538 hours - Six more depth charges, but again not close.
1539 hours - One single depth charge.
1545 hours - Four more depth charges.
1626 hours - Two distant depth charges. Crevalle was at 400 feet working to seaward. Pinging was heard for serveral more hours but no more depth charges were dropped.
18 Jun 1945 (position 39.50, 139.42)
USS Crevalle (Cdr. E.H. Steinmetz, USN) attacked a small Japanese transport out of a group of three with one torpedo in the Sea of Japan, south of the Tsugaru Strait. The torpedo missed the target.
(All times are zone I, -9) 1121 hours - In position 39°50'N, 139°42'E sighted three small transports heading south.
1133 hours - Manned battle stations. Commenced approach on the leading ship.
1209 hours - Fired a bow torpedo from 2400 yards. It missed and exploded on the beach.
19 Jun 1945 (position 39.58, 139.40)
USS Crevalle (Cdr. E.H. Steinmetz, USN) attacked two Japanese transport vessels with two torpedoes in the Sea of Japan, south of the Tsugaru Strait. No hits were obtained.
(All times are zone I, -9) 0855 hours - In position 39°58'N, 139°40'E sighted two transports on a southerly course.
0912 hours - Commenced attack. We were only 4000 yards from the beach.
0942 hours - In position 39°58'N, 139°40'E fired two bow torpedoes from 1300 yards at the partly overlapping targets.
0945 hours - Heard two explosions, most likely the torpedoes hitting the beach.
20 Jun 1945 (position 40.42, 139.56)
USS Crevalle (Cdr. E.H. Steinmetz, USN) attacked a Japanese convoy with two torpedoes in the Sea of Japan, south of the Tsugaru Strait. No hits were obtained.
(All times are zone I, -9) 0940 hours - In position 40°42'N, 139°57'E sighted two transports of about 2000 tons each and most likely our frigate friend we had encountered twice last night. Closed.
1000 hours - Battle stations.
1025 hours - Commenced attack. Enemy course 040°(T), speed 8 knots. Selected the second transport as target. Could not get as close as desired.
1052 hours - In position 40°42'N, 139°56'E fired two bow torpedoes from 2600 yards. Both missed.
21 Jun 1945 (position 42.35, 139.48)
USS Crevalle (Cdr. E.H. Steinmetz, USN) attacked a convoy with three torpedoes in the Sea of Japan off the west coast of Hokkaido. No hits were obtained.
(All times are zone I, -9) 1151 hours - In position 42°35'N, 139°37'E sighted a convoy made up of a 4000 tons transport and a smaller one of about 2000 tons. They were escorted by a large frigate or destroyer. This was the same convoy that we sighted yesterday just after completing our failed attack and we were unable to attack, hopefully we would have better luck today. Manned battle stations and commenced approach.
1242 hours - In position 42°35'N, 139°48'E fired three stern torpedoes from 2800 yards. All three torpedoes were seen to explode on the beach.
1254 hours - Depth charging started, until 1303 hours a total of 10 were dropped single or in pairs but they were all distant.
1307 hours - One depth charge, closer.
1308 hours - Two depth charges, closer.
1309 hours - At 275 feet.
1326 hours - Pinging was getting weaker.
1353 hours - Returned to periscope depth. The escort was sighted bearing 030°(T), range 5000 yards. An aircraft was also seen patrolling the area.
1359 hours - Had another look. The aircraft was still patrolling the area. Also the escort remained in the area. Went deep to 350 feet.
2040 hours - Surfaced. The escort was last seen erly in the evening but pinging was still heard in the area.
22 Jun 1945 (position 43.23, 139.47)
USS Crevalle (Cdr. E.H. Steinmetz, USN) torpedoed and damaged the Japanese frigate Kasado off the west coast of Hokkaido, Japan in position 43°23'N, 139°47'E. The bow of Kasado was blown off, she never became operational again.
(All times are zone I, -9) 21 June 1945 2306 hours - In position 43°19'N, 139°39'E obtained SJ radar contact bearing 340°(T), range 12300 yards. Commenced tracking. The contact was pinging and had radar. It is thought to be yesterdays 'friend'.
22 June 1945 0006 hours - Manned battle stations. We were already ahead of the target and our battery charge was almost completed.
0008 hours - Range to the target was now 9000 yards. The target was zigging between 060°(T) and 120°(T) at a speed of 11.5 knots.
0009 hours - Submerged.
0037 hours - Can see the target plainly through the periscope.
0041 hours - Setup looked very good, target now at 1800 yards.
0047 hours - In position 43°23'N, 139°47'E fired two stern torpedoes for a torpedo run of 650 yards. Went deep on firing. One torpedo hit was heard.
0050 hours - Started to come up. Pinging had stopped after the torpedo explosion. Screws were still heard on the bearing of the target but much slower.
0054 hours - Heard a loud explosion. No more screws were picked up on sound.
0101 hours - Periscope depth. Sighted the target. It was thought the target had overturned or was on his side.
0115 hours - Surfaced at a range of 3100 yards.
0132 hours - Departed the area.
