USS Saury (Lt.Cdr. L.S. Mewhinney) torpedoed and sank the Japanese aircraft transport Kanto Maru (8606 GRT, offsite link) about 30 nautical miles off the west coast of the Celebes, in central Makassar Strait, Netherlands East Indies in position 03°15'S, 118°27'E.
