After an uneventful 3th war patrol USS Sargo (Lt.Cdr. R.V. Gregory) left Fremantle for her 4th war patrol. She was ordered to patrol in the Gulf of Siam and off Malaya.

USS Sargo (Lt.Cdr. R.V. Gregory) ended her 4th war patrol when she returned to Fremantle.
25 Aug 1942
USS Sargo (Lt.Cdr. R.V. Gregory) departed Fremantle for her 5th war patrol. She was ordered to patrol in the Celebes and South China Sea.
25 Sep 1942 (position 10.31, 109.31)
USS Sargo (Lt.Cdr. R.V. Gregory) torpedoed and damaged the Japanese merchant Teibo Maru (4472 GRT) off coast of French Indochina, about 180 nautical miles east of Saigon in position 10°31'N, 109°31'E. She later finished off the damaged ship with gunfire.
