HMS H 34 (Lt. B.T. Simons, RN) departed Aberdeen for her 1st war patrol. She was ordered to patrol off the outer Hebrides together with special service trawler HMS Euryalus (later to be renamed HMS Hoverfly) (Lt.Cdr. E.C.L. Day, RN). (3)
30 Sep 1939 (position 57.55, -2.03)
HMS H 34 (Lt. B.T. Simons, RN) fires two torpedoes at what is thought to be a German U-boat about 15 nautical miles north of Kinnaird Head in position 57°55'N, 02°03'W. Both torpedoes missed. As there was no German U-boat in the area the attack appears to be bogus.
0303 hours - The Officer of the Watch sighted a Uboat. Two torpedo tubes were then flooded and the Commanding Officer went to the bridge.
0315 hours - Fired two torpedoes. No hits were obtained.
0324 hours - A torpedo explosion was heard. Most likely this was one of the torpedoes hitting the bottom.
Later the same day HMS H 34 arrived at Scapa Flow. (3)
