HMCS Ottawa (A/Lt.Cdr. C.A. Rutherford, RCN) picks up 24 survivors from the British steam tanker Empire Oil that was sunk by the German U-boats U-659 and U-584 southwest of Iceland. However, one of them died of wounds and 16 others when the destroyer was herself torpedoed and sunk a few days later.
