Career information
Lt.Commander Nigel Robert Harley Rodney RN took command of the destroyer HMS Concord serving in the Far East during 1949 until 1950. During the Yangtze Incident he was ordered to enter Chinese territorial waters on the 31 July 1949 and sail his ship over 50 miles up stream with orders to return fire on the Poa Shan fort at Woosung if the heavy guns there placed fired on HMS Amethyst which was escaping from incarceration by the Chinese communists. The operation officially remained secret until 1980 (personal communication).
