HMS Salamander (Lt. W.R. Muttram, RN) picks 54 survivors from the damaged British tanker RFA Aldersdale that was bombed and heavily damaged by German Ju88 aircraft of III./KG 30 in the Barents Sea north of the Kola Peninsula.
The abandoned Aldersdale was finally sunk two days later by German U-boat U-457 in approximate position 75°00'N, 45°00'E.
