For the daily and attack positions of HMS Graph during her 1st wa patrol see the map below.

21 Oct 1942 (position 44.31, -7.25)
While on patrol in the Bay of Biscay, HMS Graph (Lt. P.B. Marriott, RN) attacks but misses German U-boat U-333 with four torpedoes about 50 nautical miles north-north-east of Cape Ortegal, Spain in position 44°31'N, 07°25'W.

(All times are zone -1)
1540 hours - HE was reported bearing 290°.

1620 hours - Sighted a four-engined aircraft overhead. It was identified as being most likely a German Focke-Wulf aircraft. Meanwhile the HE had ceased. Up to this moment the HE had been thought to be that of a trawler but it was now considered that it could be a submarine that had dived upon the approach of the aircraft.

1645 hours - Strong HE was now picked up again bearing 300°. Graph was maneuvered onto a firing course.

1652 hours - The conning tower of the enemy was seen for the first time. Started attack.

1658 hours - Fired four torpedoes. Two explosions were heard after about five and a half minutes. These were followed by breaking up noises. (no explanation can be given for the 'breaking up noises' that were heard).

The KTB (Kriegs Tage Buch, logbook) of U-333 gives the following;
(All times are zone -2)
1654 hours - Sighted aircraft, could not be identified but it was quite big. Dived.

1737 hours - Surfaced.

1755 hours - Sighted torpedo tracks to Starboard. Looked like one torpedo ran on the surface. Turned hard to Port. Four tracks were seen, all missed astern. Four end of run detonations were heard. Sent report to B.d.U. and cleared the area zig-zagging. (3)

29 Oct 1942

1 Jan 1943 (position 70.48, 21.20)
HMS Graph (Lt. P.B. Marriott, RN) makes a torpedo attack on two 'destroyers' off the Altafjord. All torpedoes fired missed their intended targets.

(All times are zone -1)
0106 hours - In position 70°51'N, 21°56'E sighted a darkened vessel probably a cruiser. Distance was 12000 to 15000 yards. Altered course to attack. The ship was however lost after about 20 minutes.

------------------------------------------------

0431 hours - In position 70°48'N, 21°20'E sighted a destroyer bearing 240°. Range was about 7000 - 8000 yards. The enemy appeared to be steering from left to right. A second destroyer was sighted almost immediately behind the first. Their courses appeared to be very erratic and their speeds were very low. They were thought to be carrying out an A/S search. Turned towards to attack.

0440 hours - Fired four torpedoes at the destroyers. Two heavy explosions were heard 7 and 7 1/2 minutes after firing. Two more, much smaller, explosions were heard 9 minutes after firing. Graph retired on the surface after firing. The results were not observed.

The ships sighted by HMS Graph were the German auxiliary A/S trawlers UJ 1103 and UJ 1109 that were on an A/S patrol. The log of UJ 1103 / Gustav Körner reported one strong underwater explosion was heard and after minute one more. The ship was shaken, but not damaged. Time was 0450 hours. (3)

HMS Stoic (Lt. P.B. Marriott, DSO, RN) attacked a Japanese merchant vessel with 6 torpedoes off the Sembilan Islands. All torpedoes missed their target.

(All times are zone -6.5)
0635 hours - Sighted a torpedo boat steering North up the coast. Closed submerged at full speed but the torpedo boat passed 9000 yards away.

0645 hours - Sighted the mast and funnel of a large merchant vessel. Continued to close submerged at full speed. It would be impossible to intercept this ship submerged. As the torpedo boat was now quite some way off decided to surface and give chase.

0720 hours - Surfaced and closed at full power on the main engines. Unfortunately the merchant ship proved too fast to catch.

0807 hours - Fired 6 torpedoes from 6000 to 7000 yards. Stoic had still not been sighted. This was most likely due to the many junks in the area. The torpedoes missed, most likely, the range being underestimated. (13)

19 Mar 1944 (position 6.09, 95.09)
HMS Stoic (Lt. P.B. Marriott, DSO, RN) attacked but missed the German submarine U-183 with four torpedoes North of Sumatra in approximate position 06°09'N, 95°09'E.

(All times are zone -6.5)
1118 hours - Sighted a submarine bearing 205°. Range was about 12000 yards. Started attack.

1150 hours - Fired four torpedoes from a range of 3600 yards. The enemy was seen to alter away and increased to full speed (given the amount of smoke her engines suddenly produced). (13)

26 Mar 1944

6 May 1944
At 1135 hours (zone -6.5) HMS Stoic (Lt. P.B. Marriott, DSO, RN) fired three torpedoes from 6000 yards at a medium seized merchant vessel that was laying at anchor inside Sabang Bay. No hits were obtained, not even explosions were heard and it is possible the torpedoes hit a net or ran into the mud. (13)

8 Jun 1944
HMS Stoic (Lt. P.B. Marriott, DSO, RN) damaged a coaster with gunfire to the South of Penang.

Later the same day she sank a sailing vessel with gunfire. The Captain was taken prisoner.

(All times are zone -6.5)
1000 hours - Sighted a small 'puffer' of about 200 tons approaching from the South. Surfaced in 8 fathoms of water and closed the junk. When the depth was 7 fathoms the range was still 5000 yards. It was not wise to close further so fire was opened at this range. 32 Rounds were fired for 4 hits.

----------------------------------------

1450 hours - Surfaced and boarded a 50 tons junk. The Captain, who had been wounded by our warning round, was taken prisoner. (All times are zone -8)
0853 hours - In position 06°44'S, 109°00'E sighted smoke from the direction of Cheribon. Shortly afterwards sighted the same merchant vessel as was attacked yesterday. Started attack. When about to open fire the enemy altered course so the attack was spoiled. A new setup was made and the stern tube was fired which missed, possibly the track was seen in the flat calm sea and evaded. A new setup was made to attack with the bow tubes but the enemy altered course again.

0955 hours - Surfaced for gun action. Range was 3500 yards. Several hits were obtained. The enemy also opened fire on Stoic.

0958 hours - The enemy started to turn to Starboard. Two torpedoes were fired but these missed, most likely they were evaded. Meanwhile quite a lot of hits with the 3" gun were obtained. At least 3 of these were on or about the waterline.

1002 hours - The gun misfired. The enemy meanwhile had turned towards.

1006 hours - The gun was operational again. Range was now 1500 yards. A complete pan of Oerlikon was put into the enemy.

1007 hours - A shell from the enemy landed close to the bridge of Stoic.

1008 hours - Stoic was now stern on to the merchant vessel and it was still closing rapidly.

1009 hours - Crash dived. Altered course 90° to Port and ran out at maximum speed for three minutes in order to evade possible depth charges. The enemy however noticed the course change as Stoic was still diving and still came towards. The gun trainer was left on deck and was either picked up by the Japanese or drowned. This was only discovered at 1200 hours.

1013 hours - The enemy dropped one depth charge. No damage was caused.

1025 hours - Returned to periscope depth. The enemy was seen to be heading South towards the shore (and shallow water).

1155 hours - Fired 4 torpedoes from 2500 yards. It is thought that 3 hits were obtained but as Stoic went deep this could not be confirmed [No sinking was reported by the Japanese]. A second escort had meanwhile been spotted 6000 yards astern of the merchant vessel. After firing Stoic went deep and altered course towards the destroyer in the hope that she would pass overhead before starting to drop depth charges but no counter attack followed.

1400 hours - Returned to periscope depth. Nothing in sight. (13)

0955 hours - Surfaced at a range of 1200 yards. The 3" gun immediately misfired. Meanwhile the enemy got busy with his machinegun but his aim was way off. It took about one minute to clear the 3" gun and with the 3rd round a direct hit was obtained on the enemy's bridge. No more machinegun fire came from the enemy from now on.

1004 hours - The coaster sank after being hit many times.

1007 hours - Fire was now opened on large sugar warehouses and cylindrical tanks on the shore. Of the 50 rounds fired half fell in the 'target area'.
