Career information
Born May 14, 1911, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the eldest son of Alexander Forrester Mackintosh and Edith Winifred Wood. He attended Tower Road School and Halifax County Academy and graduated from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1934. His father was a keen and skilled sailor, and together with brother Andrew, the family won many races at the Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron. He worked as a reporter for the Halifax Herald and sold bonds and other investments with Nesbitt Thompson prior to the outbreak of WW2. Seconded to the Royal Navy, he served as Commander of HMS Ben Heilem, HMS Postillion, and HMS Scaraway. He also lectured on and sold war bonds.
During the war he was stationed at Greenock, Scotland and enjoyed discovering more about his heritage. The Mackintosh clan, were from Moy, near Inverness.
On 14 July 1945, he married Josephine Anna Balfour, daughter of David Arthur Balfour and Grace Genevieve Defoe of Toronto. Father of three daughters: Edith Grace, Suzanne Margaret, and Mary Josephine. He worked as a manufacturer’s agent in Toronto, before moving to Halifax in 1960, representing Nova Scotia Textiles Ltd. (a partially family-owned business) and other companies in Maritime Canada. He worked into his seventies and continued with his interests in sailing and golf. In 1972, he moved from Halifax to Chester, a charming town and sailing centre on the South Shore of Nova Scotia. He owned, sailed and raced two boats—Gem II and Gem III and was a lifetime member of the Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron.
Died January 13, 1995 in Chester. Buried in the family plot at Fairview Cemetery in Halifax.
