Career information
He was born on October 4, 1903. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in Annapolis with the Class of 1927. He died on October 12, 1988 and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
He was Exec and for several months was Acting CO of the Light Cruiser USS Nashville, which brought Gen MacArthur from Australia to Leyte, where MacArthur gave his "I have returned" speech on October 20, 1944. Nashville remained MacArthur's flagship in the Philippines until he revealed its name, whereupon he was quickly transferred to another ship and Nashville made a run for it. They were still in Philippine waters when they were struck by a Japanese kamikaze and over 100 men were killed. On December 13, 1944, Corwin was awarded a Silver Star for gallantry in the aftermath of the kamikaze attack.
He was awarded a Legion of Merit With V on September 11, 1945. Later, he was CO of the USS Ashtabula AO-51 from December 20, 1948 to April 17, 1950. He retired on July 1, 1957 with the rank of Rear Admiral.
