HMS Salamander (Lt. R.R. Hawthornthwaite, RNVR) together with HMS Britomart (Lt.Cdr. A.J. Galvin, DSC, RNR), HMS Hussar (Lt.Cdr. Nash, MBE, RNR) and HMS Jason (Cdr. T.G.P. Crick, DSC and Bar, RN) was mistakenly fired upon by RAF Typhoons off Cap d'Antifer near Le Havre on Sunday 27 August 1944. An Arctic veteran - she was badly damaged astern and never saw service again. (1)
