Career information
He was born in Worthing, Sussex on 06.09.1920 and died, aged 67, on 31.03.1988 of lung cancer (caused, he believed, by a lifetime of heavy smoking initiated by free, strong (Piccadilly No. 1) cigarettes made available to him as a matelot. He spoke very rarely about WW2 except to say that he had "seen and done things in the North Atlantic that no young man should ever see and do". He once told me [daughter] that he had pulled headless and limbless torsos from the water which had meant he had "lost his youth to the war". We were always told by our mother that he was "the youngest Lieutenant Commander in the British navy".
After VE Day he was posted to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), where he developed a taste for curry. On demob he returned to the family business, Roberts & Sons (Wine Merchants) Ltd., Worthing, Sussex, where, along with his father, uncle, brother and cousin, he established the Parade Wine Lodge restaurant and wine bar. His wife, Jackie, predeceased him in 1983, aged 62. His younger daughter, my sister, was born in 1950.
